removing programs

so.. gdm2.4 with garnom was giving me problems.. so i just kept the 2.2
version of debian woody... but i cant find any documentation on removing
programs from garnome... make uninstall is "not implemeted" yet, so my
guess is to just remove all the gdm stuff in the garnome/gnome
directory.. and i should be safe? any fancy footwork recomended?
