Hi Karen & Jens,

Thanks a lot for your help. The pdx.freedesktop.org/~xlibs/release link 
seems to have done the trick...at least for xft, xrender, and render.

The build went on for quite a bit longer this time, but it eventually 
stopped and gave me the following:
