evolution 1.4.5 with garnome .27.1

okay, compiling newbie here:

i cannot for the life of me compile this.  anyone come
across this?

checking for libecal-1.0... Package libecal-1.0 was
not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing
`libecal-1.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libecal-1.0' found

I am using this command to make the Makefiles:
./autogen.sh --prefix=/home/<username>/garnome
--enable-pilot-conduits=no --enable-openssl=yes
--enable-nss=no --with-krb5=/usr/kerberos
--with-db3-includes=/usr/local/include
--with-db3-libs=/usr/local/lib

do i need to uninstall my original evolution 1.4.5?
(before i installed garnome).
