Yes, I used gconftool-2 then logged out as that user and logged back in. i 
thought that was what Bill told me to do, but it didn't make any 
difference.

I hope the new releases will also fix the limited support for braille 
displays. I have an Alva320 braille terminal, but only alva380 is 
supported explicitly. That may account for the messages getting truncated.
