I had this same problem. I manually updated the garballs for xft and
xrender. You can read the thread Build Error Help
(http://mail.gnome.org/archives/garnome-list/2003-June/thread.html) to see
kinda what worked for me. Bob Kashani helped me with some of the manual
steps.
