mouse wheel scroll freezes gnome2 (and x)

i just compiled gnome-desktop in garnome 0.24.2, and i
am having an issue that i have had in versions 0.23.1
and 0.21.2: when i scroll the mouse wheel in a gnome2
app (such as the terminal that comes with gnome2, or
the network browser), the entire xserver seems to
freeze. i still can move the mouse around, but there
is no response from anything.

the keyboard doesn't seem to respond either, as
ctrl-alt-f1 or ctrl-alt-bkspc don't do anything. when
this freeze occurs, i can log into the computer from
another computer, but killing the app doesn't remove
it from the screen, and killing the xserver freezes up
the entire system. (as does the reboot command)

this seems like an xserver problem, except that the
scrolling works fine in apps that i used in gnome1
(even when run in gnome2). gtk2 apps seem to work
fine in gnome1, but mozilla with xft support freezes
the computer in both gnome1 and gnome2 when i go to
scroll the mouse.

i didn't see anything related to the crash in
/var/log/, i crashed it and then checked just to be
sure.

i am running an up-to-date debian sarge system, with
an nforce1 motherboard (and hence the built in geforce
card)

if this is more of a gnome issue, please let me know
where would be more appropriate to post it.

dan
