compiling libgnomeprint fails (because of zlib?)

Hi, 
 
I am just trying to install Gnome 2.2 with Garnome's help 
on my Debian/Powerbook (I didn't find Woody PPC binaries). 
 
The build stops with an error when compiling libgnomeprint, 
because of undefined reference to defalte / deflateInit_ / 
defalteEnd. This seams to be a problem with libz, which is 
installed (1.1.4). I don't know if there is a way to point 
the garnome build process to the zlib installation, in fact, 
this is not just the usual configure / make / make install 
way to do things... ;-) 
 
Maybe someone else has been able to solve this - I really 
would like to start my gnome....
