This looks strangely different, but might be related to an Xft 
problem I had in building kde3.1 with konstruct.  I solved it by 
making links in the /usr/include and /usr/lib directories so that 
anything looking for Xft was handed the Xft2 includes, or libs.  
RedHat8.0 has only Xft2. Worked like a champ & my fonts are great.
