Freeze on building font cache on RH8 w/ Garnome 21.2

When building garnome 0.21.2 (as well with 0.21.0 and 0.21.1) my CPU load goes 
to 100% when it goes to build the font cache.  I've let it sit for a while.  I 
did try to add in the patch ( if(delta ==0) break; ) that Weiqi Gao posted 
into the mailing list the other day.  No dice.  Any help would be appreciated.
