problem connecting to ftp.gnome.org

I've read about several problems building gnome 2.2 thru Garnome on a Redhat 8.0 system. My problem starts at connecting to ftp.gnome.org:80. The connection keeps timing out and giving me the error "failed:connection timed out". I've done exactly what the instructions tell me to do; cd /meta/gnome-desktop/ followed by make install.

With an ftpclient a connection to ftp.gnome.org on port 21 works very smooth, but there's no way i can connect to the same site on port 80; yet the installer attempts to connect on port 80.

Any tips would be very welcome as i'm dying to try out the new gnome.
