Where are the fonts?

Hi guys,

I've finally compiled gnome 2 on my iBook (whew!!) However, when I try 
running ./gnome-session it tells me I have no fonts or the fonts.conf 
is not configured properly. But my fonts are in 
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts. Could you please help me out? man fontconfig 
doesn't work either.
