You need the DEVELOPMENT PACKAGES for various libraries to build software
against them. That does *NOT* mean the normal binary library packages you
already have. The packages, for your distribution (not source on a website
somewhere), are all called either LIBRARY-dev or LIBRARY-devel or something
similar. You need those. You will not be able to build anything without
them. There is a list of Debian package names on the GARNOME website, you
can extrapolate the names of the packages for your distribution from those
(or read the garnome-list archives for lists that others have posted).
