Dear Andrew,

This is a problem with the compiler. Did you by any chance upgrade your 
compiler recently. Searching for:

C compiler cannot create executables gcc

will give you some details on the problem and solutions that people have 
used. I solved it by recompiling the full version of GCC (found here 
http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/gcc-3.3/). Don't forget to point the 
executables gcc and gxx to the right gcc/gxx executable version.
