Metacity dies every time a new program is launched (0.23.1)

Every time I load a new program, metacity dies with
this error:

metacity: relocation error: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXcursor.so.1: undefined symbol: XRenderCreateAnimCursor

I am running under rh9, which does have some new stuff for animated
cursors, so I'm not sure if that's screwing things up.

It's pretty annoying to have metacity reload with every program lauch. 
anyone know whats going on?
