xscreensaver

Thanks to Jeff and Tomasz re: /gconf.xml.mandatory, I have a working Gnome via 
garnome.

1). But does anyone know why Gnome tries to run 'xscreensaver' at startup?
and, if that is intentional, where is xscreensaver supposed to be?
(Part of XFree86 ?)

2). how do I configure garnome so that it builds in one partition and installs 
in another?
