After some happy surfing, Galeon started to show me countless empty tabs
again. A slight modification to your fix:

I think the fourth step should be "Make
$HOME/garnome/lib/mozilla-1.2b/components unwritable", so not the
mozilla directory itself, but the components subdirectory.
