xchat compile problem (and a program request)

First of all I have a small problem compiling xchat. I get an error
from ld about the version-script file. If I add the lines

        VERS_1.0{

        }

around the already existing stuff in the at file everything works just
fine. I am using GNU ld 2.11.90.0.8.

Next I would like to hear if the gnome2 version of pan could be put
into fifth toe?
