Oops, I referred to Idan Gazit's guide and fixed my own problem.

Installing Keith Packard's TT font tarball (from 
http://keithp.com/~keithp/truetype.tar.gz) to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts 
solved the problem, and Nautilus is now working a treat.  (I established the 
font search location by turning on debug output within Pango and mini-Xft)

Many thanks for putting together the mini-HOWTO; I just missed it when 
sending my post.  Sorry about that.
