Gimp not opening any files properly

I am running Gimp 1.3.7 under Gnome 2 (both built with Garnome 0.12.0). I am finding that when I
open any graphics file (GIF, PNG, JPG, XPM, etc.) all I see is a greyscale, checkerboard pattern in
the size of the file that should be opened.

Any ideas what it might be?
