Hi,
I'm not sure what your best bet for compiler options is, but from the
gentoo.org forums, where this kind of question comes up, you might find
the forum topic of "CFLAGS Central" to be helpful:

Guessing, I would say something like:
CFLAGS = "-O3 -pipe"
Would be a good starting point.
