Well, I imagine you'd have build GDM as root, and then install
everything in /opt/gnome2 or something, so as not to mess up your
current GDM.  Setup $LD_LIBRARY_PATH to look in /opt/gnome2/lib (and
maybe $PATH to /opt/gnome2/bin), and then write
/etc/X11/default-display manager to say /opt/gnome2/bin/gdm.  That
should work...I think.
