I'd love to get you all the information I can.  I switched to vc/1 and 
text was literally flying by.  I'm really at a loss how to capture it.

I should have mentioned that I have one other patch applied, the acpi 
patch from:
http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/lenb/acpi/patches/release/26-stable-release/acpi-20040816-26-stable-release.diff.bz2

I running with vesafb, reiser3 on root, 4k stacks, and 1GB lowmem if they 
make a difference.
