Hi Telsa,
Here's the answer to the question that's been burning on our minds for so long
now: who the hell is Emperor Maximilian?
Maximilian, emperor of Mexico
1832-67, emperor of Mexico (1864-67). An Austrian
archduke, he was escorted (1864) to MEXICO by French
soldiers to establish an empire for NAPOLEON III, but the
Mexicans were hostile to him and loyal to Pres. JUáREZ.
Although the French drove Juárez's army from the capital,
the empire disintegrated when French troops withdrew
(1866-67). Maximilian's wife, Carlotta (1840-1927), went
to Europe seeking help from Napoleon III. Her pleas were
in vain, and Maximilian was captured and executed.
Thanks for your edit suggestions. They all make sense to me and I've
incorporated them.
