I'm pretty sure my problem was simply fontconfig 2.1.94. Anyway:

ii  fontconfig     2.1.94-1       generic font configuration library
ii  libxft2        2.1-8          advanced font drawing library for X
un  freetype       <none>         (no description available)

AA is on, RGB mode. Hunting dunno, white on black.

I haven't gotten a chance to try fontconfig 2.2, but you can probably ignore
this bug report since I'm pretty sure it fixes it.
