Just checking that you have enough space on that partition for a
complete copy. Does
cp /home/matt/rummage/ruperttourphotos/dscf0071.jpg /home/matt/rummage/ruperttourphotos/dscf0071.jpg.tmp work ok? also does the copied file have write permission (if not you may be able to change your umask as a short term fix).

If all that works out OK, the next step is to get libjpegtrans to return
a useful error, which we've been putting off. I won't be able to get
anything done in that area for a couple of days at least.
