Note that you have the remove the configure.in-part of the patch. Else will the pc-file render incorrectly.

This, however, might confuse (the variable itself will be overwritten in each Makefile.am). 

So perhaps it's better to correctly adjust the .pc.in file (like how the Makefile.am's are now)
