what makes you think tihs patch will make any difference?  any race that might be there is still at issue.

and gtkhtml does keep the selection even after you change its content, as it should.

does copy do something else?

I think you probably need to also check that:
  ((EMFormat *)preview)->uid == list->cursor_uid
