Hmm I am not sure I understand why that makes the assumption less
reasonable...

At any rate, it's an assumption that has been made from the start, and
it's a bad idea to break it just for this.  It could introduce subtle
bugs that are difficult to track down -- and the problem can be fixed
without changing this, anyways.
