Given that this has a different meaning from the mailer's "Expunge"
command, it might be good to have a different name. (Although "Expunge"
is what Palm OS calls it, right?)

Yes, this is even more important for remote backends. Exchange will let
you bulk delete objects, which is much much faster than deleting them
one-by-one.
