"Preview Pane" was never a very good name in Evolution. In old versions
of Outlook, the name referred to the fact that you could preview the
message in the preview pane, but to actually act on it, you had to open
it in its own window. But then they kept making more and more
functionality available in the "Preview Pane" until they finally ditched
the name in 2003, where it is now the "Reading Pane".
