This basically looks ok.

You're gonna really hate me on this one ... but i've been working on
replacing the display code, so this wont get run anymore, once i've
merged it back.

However, if UI thinks the idea is sound (i think its fine), then i'll
make sure i take this functionality into the new code too.  Its probably
worth committing anyway once approved so the idea isn't lost.
