It is generic, most of is even reusable (which i think is what you meant to say), but a lot isn't because it depends very very much on the backend.  IMAP for example can only cache what is downloaded, which may not be everything.  Also, a cache isn't the same as a local "backing store" - which is what IMAP uses, it doesn't use a cache (and neither do i suspect that that is what you meant either).
