I installed the Red Hat / Fedora severn2 test2 (it includes gnome 2.4),
and the Evolution included with it hangs within 5-10mins of starting. It
won't repaint the screen. Sounds like what you describe.

BTW, on RHL9 Evolution 1.4.4 and 1.4.5 (using Ximian RPMs) have been
great for me.
