Re: firefox user trying out epiphany looking for bookmarks toolbar

Hi Matthew,

I think that's another bad idea for much the same reason. It's conflating two things -- bookmarks and browser controls -- that should be separate.

Earlier you argued for a search widget on the main toolbar. The new setup makes it possible to configure Epiphany in this way!

Even if you don't understand what the text field is supposed to do,
clicking 'Search the Web' will take you to Google. Smart bookmarks are
 still bookmarks :-)

That is also surprising-in-a-bad-way, because it looks like a label.

Smart bookmarks on the toolbar could have favicons like normal bookmarks, that should solve any misunderstanding about labels vs bookmark buttons.

It's not about "equivalent functionality", it's about being obvious.

I highly doubt that, for new users, a separate search field in the toolbar is a priori more obvious than a combined address/search entry.

Only to the extent that "http://www.google.com/search?q=jewellery+gifts+in+Birmingham"; is harder to read than "jewellery gifts in Birmingham".

I also have an (unsubstantiated) feeling that a search history would be more eye-catching than the URL history, the list of visited sites for most people won't be more than a grey blur unless they're really looking for something.

To be fair, all bookmarks in the bookmarks bar are plainly visible in
 the browser window itself.
 ...

That's no good for editing, unless you're one of those unusual people who uses the right mouse button. :-)

My point is that if you're editing bookmarks in the bookmarks editor, the browser window with the toolbar(s) will probably still be visible, unless you've maximized the editor window.

regards,
