The advantage with the "popups in tabs" feature is that if you dont want
to block the site, the popups dont interfere with your browsing and you
can then look at them at leisure.

To tell te truth, sometimes you will want a duplicate and sometimes a
blank page - so you dont want a fixed preference for this.
Under a unix system highlighting the location bar text is not really a
solution, because then you lose the clipboard selection.
An example of this is
your reading a web-page and someone posts a link in text (ie: not a
clickable link)
So in the previous system, select text, click new tab, middle click,
return.
This is not as easy with the idea that only a copy should be made.
