Re: Photo collection thingy

i also agree that it would be very cool to have an iPhoto for
GNOME. actually that's more or less what federico and i were talking
about way back in 2000 when eog collections were first being
discussed, before iPhoto even existed :-)

it would be _super_ usefull to have a generic model/view icon list
widget. i spent last night discovering that as i was working on a
nautilus view that also needs one. that alone would be a worthwhile
project.

it would be great if the xml could contain user-arbitrary categories
on the images. not hard to do and makes the thing much more usefull
for serious image collectors.

having a root would be great, esp. if you could have it track certain
directories like iTunes or Rhythmbox does. where i could say, i have
my new images in "file:///home/arik/images/" and it could update and
keep updated that collection at runtime.

the only thing i would add to the mockup is some area for image
operations like printing, rotation, color correctionm,
etc... something that iPhoto has.

having drag & drop from nautilus is key, all of GNOME should be drag &
dropable imho :-)

as i recall, something else that federico and i were originally
talking about doing was to have any type of uri in the collection
file. ie you could have

  <item>
    <uri>http://mypage.mysite.org/foo.jpg</uri>
<title>A Foo walking down the street</title>
    <author>Me</author>
    <copyright>2002, by Me</copyright>
    <date>2002/05/16</date>

and the program could then download and present them on the fly, use
cacheing and all that. that way websites with image collections could
just offer one very small file for download and then you would use the
program to get the actual images. you could also have a <thumbnail uri>
field and download the thumbnail first, present that, and then let the
user decide if they want to click and get the full image.

i'm interested in working on all of this if you get something going :-)
