I should also add that I am not using Ubuntu but Fedora 7
so this does not seem to be packaging/distribution specific
problem. More specifically, I used these packages in the 
test:

ekiga-2.0.9-0.fc6
pwlib-1.10.7-0.fc6
opal-2.2.8-0.fc6

ekiga-2.0.11-1.fc7
opal-2.2.11-1.fc7
pwlib-1.10.10-1.fc7
