I just tried :
cvs -r -d:pserver:anonymous anoncvs gnome org:/cvs/gnome/ co ekiga
and it worked...

Did you do
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous anoncvs gnome org:/cvs/gnome/ login

before the checkout ?
