Then the solution should be to paint the desktop with the selected 
background colour until the image is ready. The colour could be applied 
instantly, which would give some notion of progress.

But the painting speed could definitely be fixed. Unfortunately, I've 
noticed severe slowdowns in painting throughout the desktop since Cairo 
came in. It's a worthwhile change, but optimization is required.
