We have been doing this in Mandriva for about one year now (using the
patch at
http://cvs.mandriva.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SPECS/GConf2/GConf-2.8.1-reload.patch ) and I didn't get any complain nor bug report for it.
