Why take it out at all? It's not big, I guess it's not a huge maintenance
cost now, and it was shipped as part of the developer platform (no? it's
exposed in the API).

So really I think for future GNOMEs there just needs to be a clear and
unambiguous agreement on what the new way of dealing with audio is, and
for esd to be clearly marked as deprecated.
