I had a vague feeling work like this was already underway but that may
only have been wishful thinking on my part.

I think the point was although you can do this you shouldn't even need to.
Not only the collection view, but also the single image view should try
and preload the next image. (I think the Image Viewer in Windows XP does
this but I've only used it briefly.)
