You might want to read or skim over the following article from MSDN
about scripting Microsoft Office:

If you look at some of the example VB code, you'll see some of the
things that are possible. You can essentially do anything to the
document (including some things that are difficult or impossible to do
manually). The article also briefly describes the COM interfaces used
to expose objects for scripting, which is probably of interest.
