Just for the record.

I actually use evolution to deliver mail usually. It has simplistic
online/offline mode, and happily talks authenticated encrypted SMTP back
to work.

I did also have postfix configured up to do the same, but it broke and I
can't be bothered fixing it.

Reading the way your desktop appears to be configured seems like a cool
thing to do.
