I'm not sure what other OSes you're talking about, but the ones I have
experience with are Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and GNU/Linux where the file
selectors have been more square than anything.
Along those lines, it'd be awesome if I could turn off that extra stuff
around the file selecting bits. I know a lot of effort is going into this to
make sure it works really easily for the average Windows user, but please
don't forget the average non-GNU/Linux unix user.
