The X selection model has never been limited to text. The owner of the
selection advertises a number of targets (ie. formats), and the pasting
application requests the target. The data is then transfered in that
format. If no client ever pastes, no data ever gets transfered.
This way, an app can advertise the selection in multiple formats without
any penalty. If every time an app advertised clipboard data, it would
be requested in every advertised format, then this wouldn't be the case.
