I'm a fan of the rounded corners myself. My solution was to put bogus
launchers into the corners with the rounded corners as icons.
Why not apply a window shape mask to the panel, so users can have
corners, holes, ...whatever they want. This should be implementable
without hacking the panel-code itself too much.
