| embedding/conversion is from a guy who would be happy to license under
| LGPL, and is written in C. So there may be code there just waiting to

I beleive name of this guy is Lars Knoll, I cc'ed him, may be he can comment
on this.
I doubt though that code is in C. Anyway, most important is common API, you
can do binding to same API both in C and C++ later (just like in like
FreeType)
