.desktop viewing code?

Hi,

If you look at a .desktop file in nautilus, it appears as it would
appear on a menu and not as the original file in the filesystem.

What code where is doing this (gnome-vfs or nautilus?), and is it doing
it "right" or is it a nasty hack?
