I hate the "My" prefix as well, but in lack of a better term...

I have to correct myself somewhat though. The KDE example above does not
define the different standard locations in the file dialog, but the
sidebar in Konqueror. When I examined this I found it to be a good
solution, especially from a portability standpoint. The file dialog was
instead defined as preferences in a file .kde/share/config/kdeglobals with
the relevant section like this (the entire file contains a lot more):

[KFileDialog Speedbar (Global)]
Description_0=Desktop
Description_1=Documents
Description_2=Home Directory
Description_3=Floppy
Description_4=Temporary Files
Description_5=Network
IconGroup_0=4
IconGroup_1=4
IconGroup_2=4
IconGroup_3=4
IconGroup_4=4
IconGroup_5=4
Icon_0=
Icon_1=document
Icon_2=folder_home
Icon_3=3floppy_mount
Icon_4=file_temporary
Icon_5=network_local
Number of Entries=6
URL_0=file:/home/claes/Desktop/
URL_1=file:/home/claes/
URL_2=file:/home/claes
URL_3=floppy:/
URL_4=file:/tmp/kde-claes/
URL_5=lan:/

To me, this is a far less attractive solution. For starters, it is not
Gnome-compatible, and will never be. It is monolitic and hard to find. And
especially, this kind of data is not what I call "preferences" in my
initial mail about "Structure in $HOME". Of course, you could call them
preferences, but they are more similar to bookmarks than information about
how many lines the scroll-wheel should scroll, if you follow my analogy.
Different nature of the data...

However, I still stand by my previous proposal.

Claes
